Norah Jones

The Beatles’ın dünyaya tanıttığı efsanevi Hintli sitar sanatçısı Ravi Shankar'la konser prodüktörü Sue Jones'un kızı olan "buğulu ses" Norah Jones'un üvey kız kardeşi Anoushka Shankar da bir müzisyen. Ama o daha çok babasının izinden gidiyor.

Norah Jones'un oldukça hızlı gelişen bir kariyer öyküsü var. Vokal caz gibi bir alanda, daha 23 yaşındayken Amerikan müzik endüstrisinin en parlak yıldızlarından biri oldu. 30 Mart 1979 tarihinde New York’ta doğan, 4 yaşındayken prodüktör olan annesi Sue Cooper ile birlikte Dallas’a taşınan Jones, babasıyla altı yıl öncesine kadar görüşmedi. Annesinin de hayranı olduğu Billie Holliday’in şarkılarıyla büyüyen Norah, 5 yaşında şarkı söylemeye başladı. Zamanla Aretha Franklin ve Steve Wonder'ı keşfetti.

Manhattan'da Kendini Buldu

Norah Jones, 15 yaşındayken piyano eğitimi almaya başladı. ‘Booker T Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts’ adlı okula yazıldı. Bu okuldan daha önce Erykah Badu ve trompetçi Roy Hargrove gibi isimler mezun olmuştu. Bir yıl sonra ilk konserini yerel bir kafede verdi. İlk ödülünü de bu dönemde aldı. Bir ara Laszlo isimli bir caz - rock grubuna katılan Jones, caz piyanosu eğitimi almak için Kuzey Teksas Üniversitesi’ne kaydoldu. 1999 yılında tatil için Manhattan’a giden Norah Jones, New York'un caz ortamından çok etkilendi. Öyle ki okula dönmekten vazgeçti ve buraya yerleşti.

Norah Jones'u New York'ta ilk keşfedenlerden biri İlhan Erşahin oldu. Jones, Erşahin’in Wax Poetic grubunun ilk albümünde ‘Angels’ ve ‘Purple Elephants’ isimli parçalarda vokal yaptı. Hatta 1999 yılında Wax Poetic ile birlikte İstanbul Babylon’da iki gece sahne aldı. Jones, Wax Poetic'in ikinci albümünde de ‘Ghost’ ve ‘Tell Me’ adlı şarkılarda yine vokalist olarak yer aldı.

2000 yılında kendi yolunu çizmeye karar veren Norah Jones, söz yazarı ve gitarist Jesse Harris, basçı Lee Alexander, davulcu Dan Rieser ve gitarist Adam Levy ile bir grup kurdu. Plak şirketi Blue Note ile görüşmeye başlayan Jones, bu şirketle sözleşme imzaladı. 2001 Ağustos Arif Mardin'in prodüktörlüğünde kaydedilen ve 2002 Şubat’ında piyasaya çıkan "Come Away With Me", sade yapısıyla, güzel besteleriyle ve Jones'un tatlı sesiyle büyük ilgi gördü. Ama her şeye rağmen Arif Mardin bile başarıyı "sürpriz" olarak değerlendiriyordu. Jones da şaşkınlığını gizlemiyordu: “Böyle bir plak yapabileceğimi hiç düşünmemiştim. İstediğim noktaya gelebilmem en az beş yıl alır sanıyordum. Müzik dünyası çok büyük ve heyecan verici,” diyordu.

"Feels Like Home"

"Come Away With Me" yılın albümü, yılın pop vokal albümü, yılın prodüksiyonu ödüllerini kazandı. Arif Mardin ise yılın prodüktörü ilan edildi. Jones aynı zamanda yılın en iyi çıkış yapan müzisyeni seçildi. 'Don’t Know Why’ adlı şarkıyla da yılın şarkısı Grammy’sini kazandı.

Bu büyük başarının ardından Norah Jones, uzun turnelere çıktı. Aralarında OutKast'in de bulunduğu çeşitli sanatçılarla çalışmalar yaptı. Bu turneler sırasında Jones ve grubu bir yandan da yeni şarkılar yazdılar. İşte ikinci albüm "Feels Like Home" bu konserler sırasında oluştu. Jones şarkılarının temposunu bile gelen tepkilerle göre oluşturdu. Albümün prodüktörlüğünü bu kez Norah Jones ve Arif Mardin birlikte yaptılar. 9 Şubat 2004'te yine Blue Note Records'tan çıkan albüm 'Sunrise' isimli single ile tanıtıldı. Büyük merakla beklenen albüm, Jones hayranlarına hayal kırıklığı yaşatmadı.
